Promotion of Local Culture in the Sundarbans Impact Zone in Bangladesh through Cultural Ecotourism and Entrepreneurship, Relief International – UK

UNWTO Ulysses Award for Innovation in Non-Governmental Organizations

Second Runner-up:  Promotion of Local Culture in the Sundarbans Impact Zone in Bangladesh through Cultural Ecotourism and Entrepreneurship, Relief International – UK (Bangladesh)

The Sundarbans Mangrove Forest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Ramsar Wetland Sanctuary in Bangladesh. The project establishes cultural ecotourism sites in villages neighboring the forest, comprising households of traditional resource users of the forest, providing an alternative income opportunity through ecotourism and market linkages with tour operators and tourists. A model that embodies the essence of Responsible Tourism through the locally built eco-cottages, trained eco-guides and non motorized vehicles further encourages visitors to contribute by supporting the artists and their work, while developing an intrinsic sense of value and respect towards the local culture and ecosystem conservation.

“The award has been a celebration of inspirational ecotourism entrepreneurs in the remote Sundarbans Mangrove Forest region in Bangladesh who are trying to make a difference in their lives, communities and their ecosystem through cultural ecotourism.”

M. Nazrul Islam, Country Director, Relief International (Bangladesh)
