Air connectivity key to seizing Africa’s tourism potential
UNWTO African Members States, gathered on the occasion of the 56th Meeting of the UNWTO Commission for Africa, highlighted the need to have better coordination between tourism and air transport policies to fully explore the tourism sector’s capacity to deliver on growth and development in the continent. The meeting also discussed the on-going poaching crisis in Africa and its negative impact on tourism (28-30 April 2014, Luanda, Angola).

UNWTO-led project helps fight climate change in Indonesia
The UNWTO-led Sustainable Tourism through Energy Efficiency with Adaptation and Mitigation Measures (STREAM) project, which concludes this week in Indonesia, is supporting the tourism sector in the popular tourism destination of Pangandaran in West Java in reducing its energy footprint and adapting to climate change (Jakarta/Pangandaran, Indonesia, 5-7 May 2014).

UNWTO calls for increased support for tourism in the development agenda
UNWTO called for higher support to tourism in international aid flows as to maximize the growing contribution of the sector to socio-economic development. The case for tourism’s higher prioritization in the development agenda was made during the Focus Session ‘Tourism as an Engine for Growth and Development’ held at the First High-Level Meeting of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-operation  (Mexico City, Mexico, 15-16 April 2014).

Overcoming seasonality to support economic diversification – the case of mountain tourism
Overcoming seasonality to strengthen the competitiveness of mountain regions also as summer destinations was the topic at the centre of the 8th edition of the World Congress on Snow and Mountain Tourism. International experts identified sustainability, innovation and accessibility as key success factors to address this challenge (Andorra la Vella, Andorra, 9-10 April 2014).

UNWTO Member States set priorities for European Tourism
European Tourism representatives gathered at the 57th Meeting of the UNWTO Commission for Europe identified enhanced international cooperation, innovation, private-public partnerships and accessibility as main priorities to ensure the sector's future competiveness. The Seminar on Developing Effective Tourism Clusters, held in on the sidelines of the Meeting, laid the ground for innovative collaborative approaches for sustainable tourism development in Europe (3-4 April, Baku, Azerbaijan).

UNWTO welcomes the UK government decision to review the Air Passenger Duty
UNWTO welcomes the recent decision by the UK government to reform the Air Passenger Duty (APD). The current APD system, in place since 2008, has significantly hindered UK’s tourism while creating important market distortions affecting long-haul destinations.
