UNWTO Awards 2014 – Open for Applications
UNWTO has opened the call for applications for the 11th edition of the UNWTO Awards for Excellence and Innovation in Tourism. Interested candidates can apply until the 31 October 2014. The Award Ceremony will be held during the Madrid International Tourism Trade Fair FITUR in Spain on 28 January 2015.

UNWTO welcomes travel facilitation measures by Mongolia
Easing visa restrictions to stimulate travel is one of UNWTO’s recommendations to promote the growth of the tourism sector and its positive impact on the economy. The Government of Mongolia is one of the most recent examples of countries advancing travel facilitation by removing visa requirements for citizens of 42 countries.

Ethiopia - tourism key to promote development
During an official visit to Ethiopia, UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, met with President Mulatu Teshome, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen, and Minister of Culture & Tourism, Amin Abdulkadir, to address the advancement of tourism in Ethiopia and the key role of the sector in the country’s socio-economic development. UNWTO and Australia’s Griffith University join forces to advance tourism knowledge
Disseminating tourism knowledge, enhancing the expertise on tourism and climate change and advancing sustainable tourism in Asia and the Pacific are some of the areas of cooperation agreed between the Griffith Institute for Tourism (GIFT) and UNWTO (Madrid, Spain, 21 July 2014).

International tourism: strong peak season anticipated
Demand for international tourism remained strong in the first four months of 2014 according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. International tourist arrivals worldwide grew by 5%, the same rate as during the full year 2013. Prospects for the current peak tourism season remain very positive with over 460 million tourists expected to travel abroad in the May-August 2014 period.

World Tourism Day 2014: Celebrating tourism and community development
‘Tourism and Community Development’ is the theme of this year’s World Tourism Day (WTD). The theme underscores the potential of tourism to promote opportunities for communities around the world, as well as the role that community engagement has in advancing sustainable tourism development. The official celebrations will be hosted by Mexico in the city of Guadalajara (27 September 2014).

President of Chile receives UNWTO/WTTC Open Letter on Travel and Tourism
In recognition of tourism as an important vehicle for socio-economic development, the President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, has accepted the UNWTO/WTTC Open Letter on Travel and Tourism. The Government of Chile commits to support the sector in both the national and the international policy agenda (Santiago de Chile, Chile, 18 June 2014).

IATA and UNWTO to collaborate on innovation and talent development
Advancing innovation and talent development in tourism and air travel is the core component of the first Memorandum of Understanding signed between UNWTO and The International Air Transport Association (IATA). The MOU is part of the objectives set by both organizations of bringing the tourism and air transport agendas closer together (Madrid, Spain, 10 June 2014).
