21 January 2016 Sustainable tourism initiatives recognized by the UNWTO Awards
The Itaipu Technological Park (Brazil), the Treetop Walking Path (Lithuania), the Sisterhood of Survivors Program (Nepal) and Re-Inventing the Government in Tourism (Indonesia) were the winners of the 12th UNWTO Awards for Excellence and Innovation in Tourism. The projects were selected among more than 100 candidatures from 30 countries (Madrid, Spain, 20 January 2016).
18 January 2016 International tourist arrivals up 4% reach a record 1.2 billion in 2015
International tourist arrivals grew by 4.4% in 2015 to reach a total of 1,184 million in 2015, according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. Some 50 million more tourists (overnight visitors) travelled to international destinations around the world last year as compared to 2014. 
14 January 2016 Visa Openness levels continue to progress
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has been long advocating for the need to advance travel faciliation as a means to promote tourism development and multiply its socio-economic benefits. According to UNWTO's latest Visa Openess Report, the share of tourists requiring to obtain a visa prior to travelling continues to decline and is at its lowest level ever. In 2015, 39% of the world population could travel for tourism without obtaining a traditional visa prior to departure as compared to only 23% in 2008.

UNWTO is deeply shocked by the tragic attack perpetrated in Istanbul, Turkey. On the behalf of the entire international tourism community, UNWTO expresses its heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims and to the Turkish people in this difficult moment.
5 January 2016 UNWTO recognizes Arthur Haulot with Lifetime Achievement Award
Conferred to recognize individuals with visionary leadership and significant contribution to the tourism sector, the UNWTO Lifetime Achievement Award has been bestowed on the deceased Arthur Haulot, founder of the International Social Tourism Organization (ISTO/OITS), for his pioneer work in promoting social tourism and the right to tourism for all.
23 December 2015 Innovative projects from Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe amongst the finalists of the 12th UNWTO Awards
A total of 17 projects from Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe have been selected, from a total of 109 candidacies, as finalists of the 12th UNWTO Awards on Excellence and Innovation in Tourism. The winners in the four categories - public policy and governance, research and technology, enterprises and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) - will be announced on 20 January 2016 at the UNWTO Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner at FITUR in Madrid, Spain.
21 December 2015 UNWTO’s Ulysses Prize awarded to Doctor Richard Butler
The 12th UNWTO Ulysses Prize for Excellence in the Creation and Dissemination of Knowledge in Tourism has been awarded to Dr Richard Butler, Emeritus Scholar of the Strathclyde Business School, in Glasgow, United Kingdom. The Prize recognizes the invaluable work of Dr Butler in areas of capacity building and sustainability in the tourism sector.
17 December 2015 UNWTO activities at FITUR to focus on innovation and sustainability
The opportunities that innovation opens up for tourism and the importance of promoting initiatives in the field of sustainability and ethics will constitute the main topics of the activities to be organized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) at FITUR 2016, with the support of the Fair. FITUR, whose 36th edition will be held from 20 to 24 January in Madrid, constitutes a global meeting point for tourism professionals.

1 October 2015 UNWTO welcomes the G20 Tourism Ministers’ commitment to promote more and better jobs
UNWTO welcomes the Declaration issued by the G20 Tourism Ministers (T.20) committing to advance initiatives that promote more and better jobs and contribute to the objectives of the G20 of promoting  “inclusive and robust growth”. The 6th T.20 Ministers Meeting was held in Antalya on 30 September under the Turkish Presidency of the G20.
