On behalf of UNWTO and the University of Algarve, we would like to welcome all members of UNWTO and other participants to the Forum Tourism and Science: Bridging theory and practice, to be held in Vilamoura, Algarve, Portugal, on 1-3 June 2011.

The aim of this Forum is to achieve an ample consensus for tourism research and governance, setting a reference framework vis-à-vis the main strategic challenges that tourism is facing nowadays, such as development, climate change/sustainability and participatory implementation of policies at public and private levels. The Forum is also concerned with ways and means regarding, among other, market positioning, product and process innovation, and competitiveness.

The Forum will be initiated with an on-line discussion of these issues within the UNWTO Knowledge Network and other institutions wishing to participate in this road-mapping exercise. Then, participants in the Forum will work towards creating a UNWTO Algarve Consensus on Tourism Policy and Governance, to be finally agreed upon meeting in Vilamoura.

We call for a strong involvement of all UNWTO Members as well as other international stakeholders in tourism and related fields.
Welcome to the Forum and to Portugal.
