Houseboat Souvenir Making-A Responsible Tourism project activity at Kumarakom

Kumarakom is a sound example of public/private partnerships in tourism that work towards responsible tourism objectives. Through the creation of an inclusive Destination Level Responsible Tourism Committee, and subsequent technical committees, the Government of Kerala, has increased the linkages between the tourism sector and the local community. The Kumarakom project has positively impacted more than 1.000 members of the local community across the tourism value chain. Small and medium enterprise development policies that integrate entrepreneurs to the value chain and responsible tourism projects have been fundamental in providing benefits for the community while protecting the local culture and environment.

“The UNWTO Ulysses Award reaffirms our belief that Responsible Tourism is indeed the way ahead. It recognizes of the hard work put in by our partners – from the local community to the local hospitality organizations. The success of the initiative has proved that by building healthy private-public partnerships at the local level, we can do a world of good for the land and its people.”

Mr. Suman Billa, Secretary – Tourism
